Kristen Mumford, MD, a board-certified pediatrician with more than 15 years of experience caring for children and families, is joining UM Shore Medical Group-Pediatrics and will provide pediatric primary care at the practice’s new Chestertown location, 6602 Church Hill Road, Suite 400, Chestertown, which opened Tuesday, September 8. UM SMG is an affiliate medical practice of the University of Maryland Shore Regional Health (UM SRH), a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System.
The new location will expand access to pediatric care for families in Kent County and surrounding communities, providing another convenient option for children and families seeking comprehensive primary care closer to home.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Mumford to UM Shore Medical Group-Pediatrics and to expand pediatric care into the Chestertown community,” said Timothy Shanahan, DO, Medical Director, UM Shore Medical Group. “Her extensive experience in pediatric primary care, her commitment to caring for children throughout their development, and her particular interest in supporting neurodivergent children will be valuable additions to our team and to the families we serve.”
Dr. Mumford brings extensive experience in pediatric medicine, having provided comprehensive outpatient care for children from birth through young adulthood in independent practices, a children’s hospital network and community hospital settings. She was one of five physician owners of Wilkes Pediatric Clinic in North Wilkesboro, N.C., where she practiced since 2019.
Previously, Dr. Mumford practiced with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Care Network at its Indian Valley location in Souderton, Pa., providing well and sick visits for children from birth through age 18. She also served on the medical staff at Grand View Hospital in Sellersville, Pa., where she cared for newborns.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Mumford practiced at Tennessee Children’s Healthcare Center in Lebanon, Tenn., where she provided pediatric care from birth through age 20. She also provided inpatient and newborn care at University Medical Center Lebanon where she served as Chief of Pediatrics in 2010.
Dr. Mumford earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and her Doctor of Medicine degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pa., now Sidney Kimmel Medical College. She completed her pediatric residency at Thomas Jefferson University and A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, now Nemours Children’s Health, in Wilmington, Del.
She is a Fellow and member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and has been board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics since 2008. Her professional interests include caring for the neurodivergent population.
The new Chestertown pediatric practice represents an important expansion of access to primary care for children and families in Kent County and the surrounding region. As UM Shore Regional Health continues to expand healthcare options in Kent County, improving access to care close to where people live remains a central part of that work. developing new approaches to rural healthcare delivery and expanding access to services within the community.
