The Friends of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge recently announced the winners of the 2026 Refuge Photo Contest, which is a fundraiser for Blackwater NWR. This is the fourth year that photographers have entered their artwork in the contest to support the refuge. In partnership with the Friends of Blackwater and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge will hold their annual Youth Fishing Fun Day on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. This family-friendly event will be held at the refuge pond behind the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center, located off Route 335. Young people 15 years old and under can pre-register for the event by calling 410-228-2677 or register at the event on June 6.

CAMBRIDGE, MD – In an effort to protect migrating birds, the Friends of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge has completed the first phase of a project to prevent window collisions by applying specialized bird-deterrent film to windows at the refuge Visitor Center. This project aims to mitigate window-strike mortality during peak migration seasons. The Friends of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) near Cambridge, Maryland, is hosting a digital photo contest from May 1 to May 29, 2026, to showcase Blackwater NWR and raise funds for Refuge projects. Adult and youth participants are invited to submit photos taken between January 1, 2025 and May 29, 2026, in Refuge areas open to the public, which includes the Wildlife Drive, Marsh Edge Trail, Woods Trail, Tubman Road Trail, paddling trails, the Visitor Center butterfly garden, and Refuge property
