• City workers never know what the day will bring and how they will need to serve. Sometimes that service is outside their job responsibilities. Ja’Ron Jones, code enforcement officer, on Friday, May 15, provided assistance outside his job, and saved a life.

Riding in a city vehicle, on his way back to the office, Jones was flagged down by a man on the street. He lowered his window and the man asked for help, saying another man was overdosing. Jones asked where and the man indicated a porch. He parked, grabbed gloves and Narcan from his car, and went to the patient.

While assessing the situation, Jones placed a call to 911, asking for assistance and staying on the line. He then administered Narcan, reporting his action to the 911 operator. “He still wasn’t coming out of it,” Jones said. “So, then I gave him a sternum rub and he started coming out of it.”

As the man was coming around, EMS and law enforcement arrived. Jones explained that after the police talked with the patient, he shook Jones’ hand, thanking him for saving his life.

It wasn’t his job, but Jones knew what to do and did it, as an important part in the mission of the city to assist and protect residents. Thank you, Ja’Ron Jones.
