Cambridge Mayor Takes Temporary Leave

Effective today, pursuant to Section 3-21A(d) of the Charter of the City of Cambridge, due to health reasons, Mayor Lajan Cephas Bey has indicated a temporary inability to “discharge the powers and duties of the Office of Mayor.” This is a temporary situation, with Mayor Cephas Bey saying, “I expect this temporary inability to last approximately two to three weeks.”

Based on the charter, the duties and powers of the mayor will be assumed by Commission President Sputty Cephas for the duration of her absence. If Commissioner Cephas is absent for a meeting during this period, Mayor Cephas Bey has designated Commissioner Brian Roche to preside over the Commission of Cambridge meetings during this period.

When Mayor Cephas Bey has sufficiently recovered, she will notify City Manager Glenn Steckman. At that time the temporary period will end, and she will resume the powers and duties of the office.
