Talk: Baseball in the mid-1800's

On Tuesday, July 16, Jim Apple of the Talbot Fair Plays will speak about the old-time game of baseball — and how it was played in the 1800s — at the Heritage Museums and Gardens of Dorchester at 6pm. Prior to the discussion, visitors can enjoy hot dogs and soda pop in observance of National Hot Dog Day, beginning at 5pm.

The Talbot Fair Plays formed in 2006, more than 140 years after the original Fair Play Base Ball Club began play in Talbot County. This vintage club plays according to the rules of 1864. Some of these rules seem peculiar to baseball fans of 2019.

This Club is part of the Mid-Atlantic League that includes about thirty club nines extending from Providence, Rhode Island to Lewes, Delaware. These enthusiasts love the game enough to play this bare-handed, field ball the way that it was originally intended.
