• Skipjacks Return to Cambridge September 26

Join us at Long Wharf in Cambridge on September 26th for the 30th annual Choptank Heritage Skipjack Race. Almost all of the surviving skipjacks will be moored at Long Wharf and along the bulkhead by the county building before and after the race.

Activities start with a boat parade at 10:00 am led by the skipjack Nathan of Dorchester. The race starts at 11:00 near the lighthouse on Long Wharf. The floating dock and Long Wharf parking lot offer excellent close-up views of the skipjacks as they start and finish their race.

Food trucks and on shore activities will be available at this free event.

The race is hosted by the Dorchester Skipjack Committee. Donations and sponsors of the race help preserve survivors of the once mighty fleet of skipjacks. Once numbering about 800 boats, about 20 boats remain active. Each participating Skipjack receives around $1,500 in show-up money, providing much needed funds for ongoing maintenance and preservation.

Over the past 30 years, the Dorchester Skipjack Committee has raised and donated over $200,000 to help preserve our vanishing fleet of skipjacks.
