Join Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge staff and volunteers for this annual survey of eagles at Blackwater NWR! The eagle count is conducted in two parts: the non-roost count (morning count) takes place from 10 to 10:30am, while the roost count (evening count) takes place from 4 to 5:30pm. Both counts are conducted from stationary observation sites scattered across the Refuge. This year’s eagle count is scheduled for Wednesday, January 9, with a rain date of Thursday, January 10. On the day of the survey participants will meet at the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center on Key Wallace Drive.
If you or anyone you know is interested in participating, please contact refuge volunteer Kathy Slaughter by email at kathypaul548@comcast.net or by phone at 410-463-0890 to sign up for the non-roost count, roost count, or both. Please specify: 1) your name and phone number (only used to contact you of a cancellation), 2) which count/s you wish to go on, 3) if you want to be in a group with a particular person, and 4) your level of experience (and if you need binoculars).
