“The Restoration of the Martha Lewis”

In 1993 Randolph George undertook the restoration of one of the last American fishing boats to work under sail. The oyster dredger Martha Lewis was one of only a handful of vessels known as skipjacks still able to work on the Chesapeake. She was in serious need of repair to prevent her becoming one of hundreds of her type to sink into the depths of history.
Her story opens a window into the rich heritage of Chesapeake Bay boat building and the waterman’s way of life in harvesting a gradually diminishing resource, the Chesapeake oyster.
 
From its origins in South Dorchester County through nearly six decades of work, the story of Martha Lewis has become a “memoir of a skipjack” as told by the voices of those who knew her best. History enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their own stories about skipjacks, about the shipbuilder, Bronza Parks, and about traditions that once defined life on the Chesapeake Bay.

The South Dorchester Folk Museum (SDFM), in cooperation with the Dorchester County Historical Society, presents this FREE program in its lecture series about local history.
