The Heritage Museums and Gardens of Dorchester will welcome Pastor George Wheatley, Jr. and Lynne Mills to speak on the freak storm that cost 9 hardworking watermen their lives more than 80 years ago.
This event will begin at 12pm on Wednesday, February 20 and will include a question-and-answer session at the end. The public is invited and there will be a $3 charge for non-members.
On that fateful day eight decades ago, the weather turned in an instant, something that watermen are mostly accustomed to. With no forewarning radio call, the dredgeboat fleet was caught unaware and unprepared for the tornado that hit several of the boats broadside. The families affected were Woodland, Wingate, Roberts, Brown, Bradford, Jones and Elliot.
