Alpha Genesis CDC Presents ~ Harriet Tubman "Fight For Freedom" Dinner and Play
Have you seen the play Harriet Tubman: Defender? In Defender, Harriet’s escape, and work as a Conductor on the underground railroad were incredible. This play provides the answers to what Harriet did after she stopped being a Conductor.
Harriet Tubman played a key role in the Civil War as a nurse, a cook, and a spy. She was the first woman in U.S. history to lead a military expedition. Her experience leading slaves along the Underground Railroad enabled her to go behind enemy lines and collect intelligence which she passed on to Colonel James Montgomery. She recruited a group of former slaves to hunt for rebel camps and report on the movement of the Confederate troops. In 1863, she along with Colonel James Montgomery and about 150 black soldiers on gunboats raided plantations along the Combahee River in South Carolina. Because she had inside information from her scouts, the Union gunboats were able to surprise the Confederate rebels and free more than eight hundred slaves. Harriet is portrayed by Eunice L. Seagraves.
