| Chamber President David DeLuca thanks Dr. Barbara Viniar for speaking to the Business Development Luncheon Attendees |
The President of Chesapeake College, Dr. Barbara Viniar, informed the attendees at our September Chamber Business Luncheon at Clearview at Horn's Point that the attempt to secure funding for the planned Center for Allied Health and Athletics on the Wye Mills campus is on hold for now. Though she said that she is confident the center will be built eventually, only Kent county has committed their 12 percent of the $8.5 million total in local funds ready to be split by all 5 counties to help build the center. Caroline and Dorchester would be responsible for 19 percent, Queen Anne's 28 percent and Talbot county 22 percent.
The full cost is $36 million. A 20 year bond for $27 million would be issued on behalf of the five counties which would start in fiscal 2014. The $8.5 million already waiting would make up the difference. "The building is really important" She said. "The counties need to make a commitment to that, it would be such a great benefit to our students and our future students" As more people will be retiring by the time the center is finished, those jobs will need to be filled as well as the need to educate for the nursing opportunities that will become available.
